HUMANITIES V/S SCIENCE - S. RADHAKRISHNAN

Dr. Sarvepally Radhakrishnan (1888-1975), President of Indian during 1962-1967, was a great thinker, teacher and public intellectual. His important works are .'Indian Philosophy', 'Science and Culture' and 'Religion and Society'. He is best known for his contributions in the field of education. He was a recipient of many awards including the Bharat Ratna Award. In this essay, 'Humanities v/s Science, Dr. Radhakrishnan opines that Science without Humanities, in the field of education is just like knowledge without wisdom. As the ultimate goal of education is to help students grow in wisdom and attain self awareness with a human heart, both science and humanities are important.

Actually the wonders of Science have transformed this world. Similarly humanities have contributed ideals and aspirations to all. So, the education provided by the Universities should have both science and Humanities and send out technically skilled and professionally competent men with compassion and democratic spirit As 'Jnanam vijnana sahitham'. University education should have wisdom as well as knowledge.  Both science and religion are behind the truth.  As God is truth the quest of truth is divine.  According to Upanishads, 'Tat tvum asi' that means 'That is you' proclaims that each individual is the spark of the divine. Moreover, Dr. Radhakrishnan remarks, that is why the word 'Brahman' connotes both the truth which is sought and the spirit in us which seeks it.  As truth belongs to God and ideas belong to men, we have different religions.  As a result all religions teach universal humanism that extend sympathy towards others who don't belong to their group.

Dr. Radhakrishnan insists that education should shape a whole man, not a partially developed 'consumer' or 'technician'.  Science without humanities in our education, and knowledge without wisdom in our life will be disastrous.  Hence, we should draw inspiration from Indian cultural values and cultivate wisdom by mastering sciences.  Thus, Dr. Radhakrishnan highlights the need to link science to humanities, the role of Universities in nation building and the aim and responsibility of the individual in nation building, in 'Humanities V/S Science'.
