The United Nations (UN) is an international Organization founded in 1945 with 193 member States to promote peace, security, human rights and sustainable development across the globe. The strategy tiled "The Empowerment of Women and Girls With Disabilities: Towards Full And Effective Participation And Gender Equality" was introduced by UN. The primary aim of this strategy is to remove systemic barriers like gender and disabilities based discrimiantions and promote full and equal participation of women and girls with disabilities.
The Empowerment of
women and girls with disabilities aligns with the principles of CEDAW (The
Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women)
CRPD (The Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities) and the 2030 agenda
for sustainable development. It is
estimated that more than one billion people in the world experience some form
of disability. In addition to this,
there are refugees and migrant women, asylum-seeking displaced women, HIV
affected, old and widowed women. They
all need care, help and protection. The 'Beijing
Declaration and Platform for Action' identifies specific actions to ensure the
empowerment of women and girls with disabilities. The Addis Ababa Action Agenda commits to
provide social protection, access to education and employment for women and
girls with disabilities to achieve gender equality and women empowerment. Similar action agendas are taken place
throughout the world to achieve the empowerment of women and girls with
disabilities. Thus the strategy tries it's
maximum to ensure that no one is left behind in the pursuit of gender equality
and sustainable development.
