In an interview that Robert Smith had with Richard Skinner for Whistle Test in 1984, he talks about the reason for his leaving Siouxsie and The Banshees. The band Siouxsie and the Banshees was formed in 1976 by the vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and the bass guitarist Steven Severn. In 1982 Robert Smith joined in Siouxsie and the Banshees and played guitar. But then he was already the front man of the Cure. So, it was actually a difficult one to sustain long-term. The touring and recording for both bands placed him in strong stress. Thus it became the main reason for his leaving the Banshees. However, he started 'The Glove' project with Steven Severn in 1983, that came out with the album "Blue Sunshine' in the same year. However, 'The Glove' too became a short-lived musical venture as it was a stressful time for both Robert Smith and Steven Severn. Both were the main members in the bands of them.
Robert Smith has remained a constant member of 'The Cure' since its formation. So, the interview throws light on the future of the band. As Robert has a desire to follow his own artistic instincts, regardless of commercial consequences, his 'The Top", which was actually an experimental creativity dragged him to a commercial suicide. However, his 'The love Cats' of 1983 became the first top ten hit in UK, for its catchy melody with a distinct Jazz and playful feel. However, his 'Drone: No drone' stands apart from the other tracks as it blends post punk and modern rock elements. Still he continues as the lead singer, guitarist and the song writer in ‘The Cure’and he has come out with his 14th album in 2024 that talks about his personal loss of family members and about the Covid-19 pandemic.
